ChatGPT vs Gemini for travel
Neither suits every traveller; it depends on where your trip already lives. Gemini plans with Google Flights, Google Hotels and Maps data and, with Personal Intelligence on, can refer to flight and hotel confirmations already in your Google apps. ChatGPT searches the web and calls travel apps such as Booking.com and Expedia inside the chat. Both have a paid agent that works on booking websites for you, ChatGPT Work on Plus or Pro and Gemini's Task on Google AI Pro or Ultra, but Task is not available in the UK, the European Economic Area (EEA: the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), Switzerland or Nigeria.
Which one to choose
Choose ChatGPT if you want web search, travel apps such as Booking.com and Expedia and restaurant availability in one chat, or, on Plus or Pro, a cloud browser that can carry out bookings on websites.
Choose Google Gemini if your planning starts with Google Flights, Google Hotels and Maps, or your flight and hotel confirmations already sit in your Google apps.

Where the travel data comes from
Gemini builds on Google's own travel data. It pulls real-time options from Google Flights and Google Hotels and builds itineraries from Google Maps data, grouped by neighbourhood. With Personal Intelligence turned on, it can refer to flight and hotel confirmations already in your Google apps. Its flight and hotel search needs Keep Activity turned on and is not available in Live chats.
ChatGPT answers from live web search and from travel apps it calls inside the chat, such as Booking.com and Expedia. ChatGPT Maps shows places and local recommendations. It can also search restaurant availability on OpenTable, Resy and Yelp, though not in voice conversations or in ChatGPT Work, and it does not save, change or cancel reservations.
Who does the booking
In the standard chat, Gemini does not book. Its flight and hotel search links out to complete the booking, and it does not offer alerts on saved flights, airline-alliance search or package deals outside Google Hotels. ChatGPT's Booking.com app works in a similar way: it searches stays and rental cars, then sends you to Booking.com to finish.
Handing over the booking itself needs a paid plan on both. ChatGPT agent is no longer available; OpenAI now points people to ChatGPT Work, whose cloud browser reads, clicks and types on websites and can carry out bookings and payments, asking for confirmation first. It needs Plus or Pro. Gemini's Task, formerly Gemini Spark, uses a Chrome browser to search sites and fill in booking details, can monitor flight and hotel prices, and hands payment back to you. It needs Google AI Pro or Ultra.
Check your country first
Regional limits fall mainly on the agents. Google says Task is not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria, whichever plan you pay for. OpenAI says some apps in ChatGPT may be unavailable in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland. Prices on this page are in US dollars.
