How to choose an AI travel planner
There is no single best AI trip planner or AI travel planner; the right one depends on how you want the plan to end. For planning and booking in one free app, start with Mindtrip, which lets you book flights and hotels inside its chat through its booking partners. If you would rather a person checked the plan and booked it, Layla pairs its AI with human travel advisors. For group trips, Wanderlog puts the itinerary, map and shared expenses in one place. If you already use ChatGPT or Gemini, they can draft an itinerary without another app; dedicated planners add an editable map, saved trips and sharing, and a few also book.
Where to start, by situation
Mindtrip
AI trip planner and travel assistant
Plan and book in one place: free, and since mid-2026 you can book flights and hotels inside its chat, with a booking partner as the seller; web and iPhone only.
- You book in the same app
Layla
AI trip planner with human travel advisors
Have a person check the plan: its human travel advisors review the AI's itinerary and can book it for you; planning is free, and Layla recommends a budget of at least €100 per person per night for these trips.
- You book in the same app
Wanderlog
Trip planning app with an AI assistant
Plan with a group: real-time group editing, expense splitting and offline access to your plan; its AI Assistant may need Pro.
Stardrift
AI trip planner
Fussy about flights and times: takes constraints like arrival times and airports to avoid, and remembers airline and seat preferences. Free.
Polarsteps
Travel tracking app with an AI itinerary planner
Let past trips shape the next: its opt-in AI planner builds on trips you have logged in Polarsteps, and planning is free.
What matters when choosing
- How you ask: most planners take a chat message, some use a form, and a few build on things you already have, like past trips (Polarsteps), your calendar (Stardrift) or a travel video (Airial).
- Whether it books: a few planners let you book in their own chat (Mindtrip, with its booking partners) or through advisors (Layla); most send you to booking sites. Check who the seller is before you pay: their change and refund rules apply.
- Editing and sharing: if friends or family are coming, check for shared editing, voting and expense splitting rather than a plan only you can see.
- Where it runs: no Android app was found for Mindtrip or Stardrift, and several planners are web only. Check before you rely on one while travelling.
- What the free plan covers: some planners are free outright, others cap AI requests or lock route optimisation and imports behind a paid plan, and some AI features, such as Roadtrippers' Autopilot, are paid-only.

Planner, booker or both?
AI trip planners split into three groups. Most are planners: they draft an itinerary and link to booking sites, and you book each piece yourself. A few now let you book inside the chat, as Mindtrip does for flights and hotels with its booking partners. Layla takes a third route, handing the plan to human advisors who book it. The Layla vs Mindtrip comparison sets the two side by side.
Check who the seller is before you pay. Mindtrip's terms say every booking is made with a booking partner, not with Mindtrip; Layla does not say who sells the packages its advisors book. Whoever sells it, their change and refund rules apply.
Treat the itinerary as a first draft
AI planners turn a vague idea into a structured plan and can reshuffle it when you change your mind. Details that change often, such as opening hours, seasonal closures, prices and travel times between places, may be out of date.
Before you commit, open the source for anything time-critical, such as a museum's own website or the train operator's timetable. The planners that show places on a map make it easier to spot a day that zig-zags across a city.
Do you need a dedicated planner at all?
If you already use ChatGPT or Gemini, either can draft a day-by-day itinerary from a single message, and both now connect to live travel data: Gemini pulls Google Flights and Google Hotels results, and ChatGPT can call travel apps such as Booking.com and Expedia inside the chat. The ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison covers what each can book and which plan its agent needs.
Dedicated planners earn their place when you want the plan to live somewhere: a map you can edit, a trip your companions can see, saved bookings, offline access or booking in the same place. For a one-off list of ideas, the assistant you already have may be enough. How to plan a trip with ChatGPT shows how far a general assistant gets on its own.
Free AI itinerary generators
If you only need a first draft of a city break or a two-week holiday, several AI itinerary generators are free. Wonderplan builds a custom itinerary with accommodation ideas from your interests and budget and lets you download it as a PDF. MonkeyTravel, which says it is 100% free, produces hour-by-hour days with restaurants and walking routes and lets companions vote on activities. Both run only on the web.
Several planners with booking or group features are free too: Mindtrip, Stardrift and Pilot describe themselves as free, and Polarsteps says its AI planning is free. Vacay's free Personal plan includes unlimited use of its standard chatbot and itinerary planner, and aitrips.io's free plan allows about 15 AI requests every 30 days.
Free plans can change. Wonderplan's FAQ says it is free 'at least for now', and MonkeyTravel plans optional premium features later while keeping the core planner free. Whichever generator you use, treat the result as a draft and check opening hours and travel times yourself.
Read the free plan closely
A free download does not always mean free AI. iMean limits free use to daily access, Stippl reserves unlimited AI generation and route optimisation for Pro, and Wanderlog's own AI page quotes reviewers describing its AI Assistant and route optimisation as Pro features.
Prices on the provider's website and in the app stores do not always agree. Layla's iOS listing still shows Premium subscriptions, but Layla's terms say Premium has not been offered to new subscribers since August 2026. Each listing records what each source says, with the date we checked.

AI trip planners: common questions
Which AI is best for travel planning?
It depends on how you want to finish the plan. Mindtrip suits planning and booking in one free app, Layla adds human advisors who book for you, Wanderlog suits group trips, and Stardrift handles precise flight constraints. If you already use ChatGPT or Gemini, either can draft an itinerary without another app. None is best for every trip.
Can an AI trip planner book my trip?
Some can. Mindtrip lets you book flights and hotels inside its chat (with its booking partners), you can book stays through Pilot, and Layla's advisors can book the plan for you. Most other planners suggest options and send you to booking sites, where you complete the purchase yourself. Check who the seller is before you pay.
Are AI trip planners free?
Many are. Mindtrip, Stardrift, Wonderplan, Pilot and MonkeyTravel describe themselves as free, and Polarsteps says its AI planning is free. Layla says planning is free; you pay for the travel if its advisors book it. Others offer a free plan with limits and charge for unlimited AI use or extra features.
Is ChatGPT good for planning a trip?
For a first draft, yes: it can write a day-by-day itinerary from one message and check current details with web search, while dedicated planners add an editable map, shared editing and saved trips. How to plan a trip with ChatGPT covers the travel apps inside it and what needs a paid plan.
Can I use an AI trip planner offline?
Partly. Wanderlog offers offline access to your plan, and Wonderplan lets you download an itinerary as a PDF. The AI features themselves generally need a connection, so finish planning before you lose signal.
