How to choose an AI tour guide
The best AI tour guide depends on how you like to explore. For a self-guided walk, Audiala and SmartGuide play audio stories as you move, and both offer offline guides (paid on SmartGuide). To ask about a building, sign or menu in front of you, Google Lens answers from your phone camera for free, and Ray-Ban Meta glasses do it hands-free. Gemini in Google Maps answers questions about places around you, though Ask Maps was rolling out only in the US and India as of March 2026. If you would rather not install anything, GuideGeek works inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

What matters when choosing
- How it answers: audio stories that play as you walk (Audiala, SmartGuide), a camera you point at things (Google Lens, Lens in Maps, Ray-Ban Meta), or a chat you type or speak into (GuideGeek, TripGenie, Ask Audiala).
- Coverage where you are going: SmartGuide's tours depend on what destinations and partners have published, and several Google Maps features launched in the US first. Check your destination before relying on one.
- Offline use: Audiala lets you download city guides, but its AI assistant needs a connection; SmartGuide's offline maps and guides are part of its paid option; Ray-Ban Meta sends camera questions to Meta's cloud.
- Cost after day one: Google Lens, Gemini in Maps and TripGenie are free; Audiala unlocks everything on install day, after which some features need a 7-day Trip Pass or a subscription; SmartGuide sells premium access and city guides.
- Where it runs: GuideGeek only in Meta's messaging apps, TripGenie inside the Trip.com app, and Ray-Ban Meta glasses only with the Meta AI app on your phone.

Audio guide, camera or chat?
In-trip AI tools work in three ways. Audio guides such as Audiala and SmartGuide play stories that start as you walk, so you can keep your phone in your pocket. Camera tools such as Google Lens and Ray-Ban Meta glasses answer questions about what is in front of you. Chat assistants such as GuideGeek and Trip.com's TripGenie answer typed or spoken questions about where to go next.
Several now combine these. Audiala and SmartGuide add an AI chat to their audio tours, Google Lens opens Search Live for a spoken conversation about the camera view, and TripGenie's Live Guide gives real-time voice and camera help inside the Trip.com app.
Coverage is uneven
How much a guide knows depends on the place. SmartGuide says it covers over 100,000 places in 30+ languages, but its tours come from destinations, museums and tour operators, so a town nobody has published a guide for has less to offer.
Features also arrive country by country. Ask Maps in Google Maps was rolling out in the US and India in March 2026, Lens in Maps and landmark navigation launched in the US in November 2025, and Search Live works only where Google offers AI Mode. Check that a feature is available where you are going before you count on it.
Check what the answer is based on
These tools answer quickly, but the answers come from different places. Gemini in Google Maps draws on data about over 300 million places and user reviews. Matador Network has said GuideGeek combines OpenAI's GPT-4 with its own travel content, and that human experts review conversations to correct errors.
Google labels the generative answers in Lens as experimental, and the same caution applies to every tool here. For anything that would change your plans, such as opening hours or ticket prices, check the venue's own website. To translate a menu or sign rather than ask about it, see the guide to AI translation for travel.
Before you lose signal
Audio guides are the most usable offline. Audiala lets you download city guides for offline listening, though its AI assistant needs a connection, and SmartGuide includes offline maps and guides in its paid premium option.
Answers worked out in the cloud need data. Ray-Ban Meta glasses send the photo to Meta's cloud when you ask about what you see, and GuideGeek runs inside messaging apps. If you use the Trip.com app, TripGenie can sell you an eSIM inside its chat.

Can I use an AI audio guide offline?
Partly. Audiala lets you download city guides for offline listening, and SmartGuide offers offline maps and guides as part of its premium option. Audiala says its AI assistant still needs a connection.
