What is an AI travel agent, and which ones book?
An AI travel agent is an AI service that searches live prices and availability and books travel for you, rather than only suggesting places. Some book inside the conversation: Lola and Otto carry out the booking steps themselves, while Google AI Mode and Priceline's Penny let you check out without leaving the chat. Others, such as ChatGPT Work, Gemini's Task and Perplexity's Comet, operate a web browser on ordinary travel sites and need a paid plan: ChatGPT Plus or Pro, Google AI Pro or Ultra, or Perplexity Pro or Max. Each covers only part of a trip: Lola does not book flights yet, Google AI Mode lets you book US hotels and restaurant tables but not flights, and Otto is built for work travel. Most ask you to confirm before they book or pay. Check whose confirmation you receive: that seller's change and refund rules apply.
Where to start, by situation

- Books for you
Otto
AI travel agent for business trips
Travel for work: built for business travellers: it plans around your Google Calendar or Outlook, books flights and hotels when you say 'book it' and rebooks when plans change. Free for one year, per its homepage; later pricing is not published.

Google AI Mode travel booking

- You book in the same app
Comet
AI web browser with built-in agent
Have an agent work through travel sites: its assistant works across browser tabs on jobs such as finding the cheapest flight and asks before acting in your browser; agent use needs Perplexity Pro or Max.
- Books for you on paid plans
What matters when choosing
- Who does the booking: Lola and Otto carry out the booking steps themselves; Google AI Mode, Priceline's Penny and Mindtrip let you check out inside the chat; browser agents fill in forms on other sites, and while Gemini's Task hands payment back to you, ChatGPT Work and Claude in Chrome can complete a purchase after you approve it.
- What it can book: Lola covers hotels, restaurants and activities but not flights yet, Google AI Mode books US hotels and restaurant tables but not flights, and Otto books flights and hotels for work trips. Check that your trip fits before you start.
- Who the seller is: Google names the hotel or booking partner as merchant of record, Lola's and Mindtrip's terms say you book directly with the provider or booking partner, and with Penny you book through Priceline. Otto does not say who the seller is. Changes and refunds follow the seller's rules.
- Where it works: Google AI Mode hotel booking is US-only, Gemini's Task is not available in the European Economic Area (the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria, Meta's Muse is in limited testing and rolling out in the US, and Browse with Copilot is for US subscribers.
- What it costs: Lola's free membership includes booking, though its paid plans lock you in for a year, and Otto is free for its first year. Most browser agents need a paid plan, such as Google AI Pro ($19.99/month), ChatGPT Plus or Perplexity Pro ($20/month each); Meta's Muse, in limited US testing, has a capped free tier.

Two ways an AI books
Some AI travel agents book with travel providers they are connected to. Lola and Otto carry out the booking steps themselves once you confirm, while Google AI Mode, Priceline's Penny and Mindtrip let you check out without leaving the chat. Lola, for example, offers a choice of booking sources for hotel stays so you can compare prices.
The other route is a browser agent. ChatGPT Work, Gemini's Task, Perplexity's Comet, Claude in Chrome and Meta's Muse open ordinary websites, click, type and fill in forms for you, and all but Muse's capped free tier need a paid plan. Each asks for your approval at set points: Gemini hands payment back to you, ChatGPT and Claude wait for confirmation before a reservation or purchase and can then complete it, and Comet asks before it runs a task in your browser. The ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison sets out what each one's agent can do and which plan it needs.
The seller's rules still apply
Whichever route you take, find out who the seller is. Google says the hotel or booking partner is the merchant of record for AI Mode bookings and handles confirmation, changes, cancellations and refunds. Mindtrip and Lola say in their terms that you book directly with a partner or provider, and Lola's terms let it charge your card for a provider's no-show fee. Otto does not say who the seller is, so check the confirmation you receive.
Browser agents add another risk. Microsoft calls Browse with Copilot, its agent in Edge for US Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers, experimental, says it may misinterpret instructions or make mistakes, and advises against using it for financial activity. Before approving any payment, check the names, dates and total on the final screen yourself.
If you want a person involved
Some services keep people in the loop. Otto partners with a travel management company for human help. Layla, an AI trip planner, has human advisors who review its itinerary and book it: the process starts with a conversation with an advisor, the homepage shows about 48 hours to finalise a trip, and Layla recommends a budget of at least €100 per person per night.
Lola's paid Plus ($5/month) and VIP ($25/month) plans add hotel discounts, and lola.com lists concierge access among perks marked 'Coming Fall of 2026'. Both lock you in for a year: Lola's terms say the full first-year fee ($60 or $300) is owed even if you are billed monthly or cancel early. Its free membership already includes discovery, planning and booking.
New, and changing quickly
Many of these services are only weeks or months old. Google added hotel booking to AI Mode on 27 August 2026, Lola launched on 29 September 2026, and Meta announced Muse in September 2026. Lola says flights are coming soon, and in Google AI Mode flights are still bought on the airline's site or a booking site.
Services also disappear or change shape. OpenAI's ChatGPT agent, which could make reservations on websites, is no longer available, and OpenAI now points people to ChatGPT Work. Booking Holdings' Vayo, announced on 14 October 2026, is an invite-only beta that reads booking confirmations from your inbox and, with your approval, claims refunds when prices drop, but it does not book directly yet.

AI travel agents that book: common questions
What is an AI travel agent?
An AI travel agent searches live travel options and books them for you, rather than only suggesting them. Some, like Lola and Otto, book with partner providers inside a chat; others, like ChatGPT Work, Gemini's Task and Perplexity's Comet, use websites in a browser on your behalf and need a paid plan. Most ask you to confirm before they pay.
Can an AI travel agent book flights?
Some can. Otto books flights and hotels for work trips, Mindtrip lets you book flights inside its chat, and Priceline's Penny covers flights, hotels and car hire with booking in the conversation. On a paid plan, browser agents such as ChatGPT Work (Plus or Pro) can work through an airline or booking site for you. Lola does not book flights yet, and Google AI Mode books hotels and restaurant tables but not flights.
Will an AI agent pay for my trip without asking?
Most agents covered here say they ask before purchases or hand payment back to you: Gemini's Task hands payment back, Google AI Mode has you confirm with Google Pay, and ChatGPT Work, Claude in Chrome and Meta's Muse ask before purchases. Perplexity says Comet asks before it runs a task in your browser and before filling in details it does not know. Lola and Otto book as you confirm each piece. Agents can still make mistakes, so check the final screen before you approve.
Are AI travel agents free?
Some are. Lola's free membership includes booking, Otto is free for its first year, and Google does not mention a fee for AI Mode hotel booking. Lola's paid Plus and VIP plans lock you in for a year. Most browser agents need a paid plan: in the US, Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month, and ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro are $20 a month. Meta's Muse has a capped free tier while in limited US testing.
Who do I contact if an AI booking goes wrong?
Usually the seller rather than the AI service. For Google AI Mode hotel bookings, Google says the booking partner handles changes, cancellations and refunds, and Mindtrip's and Lola's terms say the booking partner or provider handles it. Keep the seller's confirmation email, not just the chat.
