What is AI Translate?
AI Translate, listed in the app stores as AI Translator: Voice & Camera, is a phone translator built to work without a connection. You download a language pack once (about 30 MB each, 59 languages), then point the camera at a sign or menu to see the translation laid over the text, import a photo or screenshot, type or paste text, or speak. A Scan tab names more than a thousand everyday objects in both languages with audio, and you can save words to review later. There is no account, and Frame Sixty Labs says photos and camera frames never leave the phone.

How AI Translate uses AI
Frame Sixty says text recognition, object recognition, translation and language identification all run on the phone using Google ML Kit's on-device machine-learning models, so camera, photo, text and object translation keep working in airplane mode.

- The camera and photo import read only Latin-script text (37 of the 59 languages); Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Thai and the other non-Latin languages work only by typing, voice or the object scanner

- Download each language pack (about 30 MB) before you lose your connection
- Voice input uses your phone's own speech recognition, which Apple or Google may process online and which works offline only for languages your phone can dictate offline
- There is no two-way conversation mode
