Plan a trip with Gemini and AI Mode
Gemini turns a plain-language trip description into flight and hotel searches and an itinerary grouped by neighbourhood, using real-time options from Google Flights and Google Hotels and places from Google Maps. With Personal Intelligence turned on, it can refer to flight and hotel confirmations already in your Google apps. Its flight and hotel search needs Keep Activity on, and it cannot book, cancel or change reservations or set alerts on saved flights.
AI Mode in Search has its own planner. Trip planning with Canvas launched in November 2025 as a Search Labs experiment for US desktop users who opted in. Select “Create Canvas” and a plan builds in a side panel from real-time flight and hotel data, Google Maps photos and reviews, and information from across the web, comparing hotels by price and amenities. Google’s August 2026 travel post does not say whether Canvas has left Labs or expanded beyond the US.

What Google’s AI can book, and what links out
- Hotels, in AI Mode (US only, in English). Compare hotels in the chat, choose “Continue on Google”, pick a room and pay with Google Pay. The hotel or booking partner, such as Booking.com, Expedia or Marriott, is the merchant of record and handles changes, cancellations and refunds. You need a Google Pay method with a US billing address, and promo codes, points redemption and loyalty numbers are not supported.
- Web errands, with Gemini’s Task (AI Pro or Ultra). Task (formerly Gemini Spark) uses Chrome on a computer, or a cloud browser on mobile, to search sites and fill in booking details. It then hands payment back to you rather than paying itself.
- Restaurants. Ask Maps can make restaurant reservations, and AI Mode has offered agentic restaurant booking in the US since November 2025.
- Flights. AI Mode cannot book them and Gemini’s standard search links out, so you buy on the airline’s or a booking site.
Booking sites have their own assistants too: see AI on Expedia, Booking.com and other travel sites.
Cheaper flights: Flight Deals and price tracking
Flight Deals, a beta inside Google Flights, takes a rough description of where, when and how you want to travel, suggests destinations and dates, and searches fares from more than 300 partners. It labels deals against the route’s typical price, which Google defines as the median of the cheapest prices over the past 12 months; a “Savings Deals” badge needs a fare at least 20% below it. Searches may return nothing for multi-city trips, infants, groups larger than four or specific layovers.
Since 27 August 2026, AI Mode can set a Google Flights price alert while you chat and email you when the fare for your route and dates changes. It can also show prices in points with partners such as American Airlines and Hilton. Google says it works in more than 180 countries and territories, excluding the EEA. The guide to AI flight price predictors and fare alerts covers other fare tools, including buy-now-or-wait forecasts.
On the trip: Maps, Lens and Translate
- Ask Maps answers questions about places using data on more than 300 million places and user reviews, and can suggest stops along a route. Gemini navigation in Maps takes spoken, multi-step requests while you drive.
- Google Lens translates menus, signs and handwriting in over 100 languages and helps you learn about landmarks and artwork. Its Live option opens Search Live, a spoken back-and-forth about what the camera sees. Google labels the generative AI in these answers experimental.
- Google Translate’s Gemini-powered Live translate interprets conversations in 70+ languages, a few seconds behind the speaker, and can play through any connected headphones.
- Pixel Voice Translate translates phone calls on Pixel 10 and later, on the device and without an internet connection, between English and ten languages.
The guides to AI tour guides and in-trip help and AI translation for travel cover other options, and Google Translate vs DeepL compares the two translators.
Which plan you need
Gemini is free with a Google Account. In the US, Google AI Plus costs US$4.99 a month, AI Pro US$19.99 and Ultra from US$99.99, and each raises limits; Task needs AI Pro or Ultra. Gemini in Maps, Lens, Translate and Flight Deals are free, and Google mentions no charge for AI Mode’s trip planning, price tracking or hotel booking, where you pay the partner’s price through Google Pay. Pixel Voice Translate comes with Pixel 10 and later phones.
Common questions
What is Ask Maps in Google Maps?
A free Gemini feature in Google Maps that answers questions about places and can suggest stops along a route; Google began rolling it out in the US and India in March 2026. The Gemini in Google Maps listing has the details.
Can Google's AI book flights?
Not in AI Mode or Gemini's standard flight search: both show live options, and you buy on the airline's or a booking site. Gemini's Task, on the paid AI Pro and Ultra plans, can search sites and fill in booking details, then hands payment back to you. Task is not available in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria.
Does Google Flights use AI?
Yes. Flight Deals, a beta page inside Google Flights, turns a plain-language description of a trip into destinations and dates (see the Flight Deals listing), and AI Mode in Search can set a Google Flights price alert while you chat, outside the EEA.
Is Gemini free for trip planning?
Yes. With a free Google Account, Gemini builds itineraries from Google Maps data and pulls real-time options from Google Flights and Google Hotels, then links out for booking. In the US, Google AI Plus (US$4.99 a month), AI Pro (US$19.99) and Ultra (from US$99.99) raise limits, and Task needs AI Pro or Ultra.
Which of Google's AI travel features work outside the US?
Flight Deals has been rolling out to more than 200 countries and territories since November 2025, Gemini navigation in Maps works wherever Gemini is available, and Search Live in Lens works wherever AI Mode is offered. Ask Maps launched in the US and India. Hotel booking in AI Mode is US only, AI Mode flight price tracking is not offered in the EEA, and Gemini's Task is not offered in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria.
